The vital role of resident associations and community groups in enhancing accountability and ensuring effective service delivery was the focus of the recently concluded Bi-monthly talk forum held on 7th June at Sirikwa Hotel in Uasin Gishu County, organized by KARA in partnership with Hanns Siedel Foundation (HSF). The event brought together key stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society organizations, community groups and resident associations from Uasin Gishu County.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Richard Omanyala, KARA Member and Representative, Eldoret Municipal Board, emphasized the importance of grassroots organizations in holding local governments accountable. \”Resident associations and community groups are the backbone of our communities. Their involvement ensures that the voices of the people are heard and that service delivery meets the needs of the residents,\” said Omanyala.
The forum featured insightful panel discussions on various aspects of community engagement and accountability. Panelists included Mr. Johnstone Kotut, Social Accountability Expert, Mr. Joseph Omollo Dolly, Secretary General, Uasin Gishu County Civil Society Network. They shared best practices and highlighted the challenges faced by community groups in advocating for better services, and key recommendations aimed at strengthening the role of resident associations and community groups.
Participants acknowledged the challenges that resident associations and community groups often face. These include limited resources, lack of technical expertise, and sometimes resistance from local authorities.
The forum concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to support and collaborate with resident associations and community groups. Strengthening these grassroots organizations is seen as a key strategy for improving accountability and ensuring that service delivery meets the needs of all citizens.
