Nairobi County Government to establish independent authority dedicated to solid waste management in the City

Solid waste management in Nairobi may soon be done by an independent body of the County to deal with the garbage menace rocking the City. Governor Johnson Sakaja told the Senate Committee on Finance and Budget that he is in the process of establishing the Nairobi County Solid Waste Management Authority.

Mr. Sakaja said that the county has already received 24 tippers and expects another 200 garbage collection trucks as the county moves to take control of garbage collection from private players.

Approximately 2,000 tonnes of waste is generated daily in Nairobi, but poor access roads to the city’s official dumpsite in Dandora has led to faulty garbage collection tracks, consequently hampering garbage collection and disposal. Data from the Economic Survey 2024 shows that Nairobi City County generated 1,191,500 tonnes of garbage in 2023 compared to 1,095,000 tonnes in 2022.
