KARA Supports Ombudsman Report and Calls for Stronger Urban Accountability

KARA recently paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Charles Dulo, Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman), following the Commission’s investigation into alleged irregular building approvals and regulatory failures in Nairobi City County. KARA was represented by CEO Henry Ochieng, Governing Council Chairman Richard Nyaga, Council Members Ephraim Kanake and Paul Oyier, alongside members of the Programs Team. The meeting was also attended by Osman Mohamed, Director of Public Education and Advocacy, at CAJ, along with the Commission’s Corporate Communications and Investigative Affairs team

During discussions, our CEO, Henry Ochieng, highlighted the vital role both KARA and the Commission play in safeguarding public interest, enhancing service delivery, and fostering strategic partnerships. Chairperson Charles Dulo reaffirmed the Commission’s constitutional mandate to promote access to information, strengthen service delivery, and uphold accountability, emphasizing the need for collective action to address systemic urban governance challenges.

KARA supports the Ombudsman’s findings, which confirm long-standing concerns from residents, including illegal developments, ignored stop orders, and public officers failing in their duties. The organization calls for criminal prosecution, compensation for affected residents, and urgent reforms to restore safety, fairness, and trust in Nairobi’s urban governance. By partnering with oversight institutions and stakeholders, residents’ voices are amplified, their rights protected, and urban development guided toward safety, legality, and equity.
