ABOUT THE AWARDS
The Annual Resident Associations Excellence Awards (ARAEA) is a flagship initiative of the Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) that recognizes and celebrates Resident Associations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership, innovation, and impact in promoting sustainable communities and improving access to quality public services across Kenya.
The Awards acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Resident Associations in advancing community development, strengthening citizen participation, and influencing improved service delivery. They also provide a platform for recognizing exemplary initiatives, sharing best practices, and inspiring excellence across neighbourhoods nationwide
OBJECTIVES
- Recognize and celebrate Resident Associations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership and measurable impact in advancing the interests and well-being of their members.
- Showcase innovative and successful community initiatives that contribute to improved service delivery, sustainable neighbourhoods, and enhanced quality of life.
- Promote knowledge sharing and replication of best practices among Resident Associations across Kenya.
- Raise public awareness of the critical role Resident Associations play in strengthening urban governance, community participation, and sustainable development.
- Encourage a culture of excellence, accountability, innovation, and active citizenship within neighborhoods
ELIGIBILITY
The Awards are open to all Resident Associations that are legally registered in Kenya and have successfully implemented projects, programmes, or initiatives that align with one or more of the award categories.
WINNERS IDENTIFICATION PROCESS
Award recipients are identified through a transparent, independent, and competitive evaluation process.
An independent panel comprising distinguished governance experts and community development practitioners, assesses all submissions using predetermined evaluation criteria specific to each award category.
Entries are evaluated on their innovation, impact, sustainability, scalability, community participation, and replicability. The decisions of the independent judging panel shall be final

Residents Association of the Year
Recognizes a Residents Association that has demonstrated Exceptional leadership, good governance, innovation, sustainability, and measurable impact in improving the quality of life within its community
Mazingira Award
Recognizes exceptional initiatives that Promote environmental conservation, climate resilience, waste management, and sustainable environmental practices within neighbourhoods
Usalama Award
Recognizes outstanding efforts in promoting neighbourhood safety, security, community policing,disaster preparedness, and crime prevention
Mawasiliano Award
Recognizes excellence in communication, stakeholder engagement, digital innovation, transparency, and effective information sharing among members.
Maji Award
Recognizes outstanding initiatives that improve access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for residents.
Afya Award
Recognizes exceptional efforts in promoting public health, sanitation, hygiene, disease prevention, and healthy living within communities.
Drug Abuse Prevention Award
Recognizes impactful community initiatives aimed at preventing alcohol and substance abuse through awareness, advocacy, rehabilitation support, youth engagement among other initiatives
Viwanja Award
Recognizes exemplary efforts in protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of public open spaces, parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities.
Ujenzi Award
Recognizes outstanding initiatives that promote compliance with planning and development regulations while addressing illegal developments and protecting orderly urban growth.
Miundombinu Award
Recognizes exceptional contributions towards the development, maintenance, protection, and improvement of public infrastructure, including roads, drainage systems, street lighting, walkways, and other essential community facilities.
