Kara held the 1st ever debate for Nairobi City County Gubernatorial candidates on 29th June 2017. This is the first among a series of debates to be held across the country to provide a platform for key County stakeholders to engage gubernatorial candidates and understand their plans for the County if elected. The debates also provide an opportunity for the candidates to understand the expectations and priorities of County residents as far as service delivery issues are concerned. The candidates who participated in the debate included the incumbent Dr Evans Kidero, Messrs Miguna Miguna, Michael Mutinda, Godfrey Wanyoike and Macharia Kamau. Discussions focused on key service delivery areas such as Land & Physical Planning; Environment, Water & Sanitation; Road Infrastructure Development & Transport; Public Participation; Housing among others. Speaking during the opening of the debate, Kara CEO Mr. Henry Ochieng said that the debates were conceived with the goal of enabling voters to make informed choices and elect individuals who will meet service delivery expectations of County residents. Each of the five candidates articulated their vision for the City with the incumbent Dr. Kidero being accused of not having done much to make Nairobi better than he found it. In his defense the Governor explained that Nairobi has had no functional urban plan to guide development and growth of the city. This has however now been developed and the County Government is working on implementation, he said. Mr. Miguna pointed out that Nairobi requires a courageous leader with integrity to fix the various challenges it faces. He said that he intends to build a light rail and subway system to address the transportation challenges in the City. After Nairobi, Kara is set to hold similar debates in Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kakamega, Embu, Kitui and Mombasa.
