All buildings in rural and urban areas in Kajiado County will now be required to have water harvesting and storage infrastructures.

This is after Governor Joseph ole Lenku assented to the Kajiado Water Harvesting Bill that requires developers of residential and commercial buildings to incorporate water harvesting facilities in their building plans for approval by the County Government.

The law provides for the issuance of completion certificates to developers who will comply with the new regulations. The County Government will also provide financial assistance to resident associations, schools, hospitals and charitable institutions to establish the infrastructures. Existing buildings have been given 18 months to comply with the law, while upcoming ones given a grace period of three months.
Defying the law will attract a fine of sh. 100,000 for commercial buildings and sh. 50,000 residential buildings or six months imprisonment.
