The 3rd Kara Business Expo & Conference event was successfully held on 15th to 17th November 2018 at the Sarit Center, Nairobi.

The event under the theme ‘Making Affordable Housing a Reality and Responsive to Community Needs’ brought together several delegates and exhibitors from the public and private sector to showcase their products and services in the market and demonstrate how their work is supportive of the affordable housing agenda.

The event was officially opened by Mr. Nzioka Waita, Chief of Staff and Head of President’s Delivery Unit. Mr. Waita highlighted the governments’ affordable housing plan stating that the initiative is intended to address the housing deficit in Kenya and ensure that majority of Kenyan citizens are able to own homes. He stated that the Government is keen to work with various stakeholders towards the affordable housing goal and especially organized groups like Resident Associations. In order to enhance access to information on affordable housing, Mr. Nzioka said that an online portal will be developed where all data and information regarding the initiative will be posted.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Mr. Patrick Bucha, Housing Secretary at the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and Dr. Thomas Chiramba, Senior Human Settlements Officer at the UN Habitat. Mr. Bucha said that government was undertaking development of low cost houses on a pilot basis in Mavoko, Parklands, ShauriMoyo and Makongeni areas. “The government will also promote the use of technology in attaining quality and affordable housing units” he said.

Dr. Chiramba on his part said that UN Habitat will support the affordable housing plan by offering innovative designs for the housing units and working with the government to develop innovative financing models for the housing agenda.

Kara Business Expo and Conference is an annual event that provides a platform for delegates and exhibitors to network, learn, share ideas, sample goods and services in the market and seal business deals. The main activities include exhibitions, conference and the Annual Resident Associations Excellence Awards to reward and celebrate Resident Associations that have excelled in promoting service delivery interest of their members.
