The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) supports the ongoing crackdown by the Nairobi City County Government through the Director of Liquor Licensing, on bars in Nairobi that are responsible for excessive noise and vibration across various neighborhoods.

Article 42 of the Constitution states that every person has a right to a clean and healthy environment. Majority of bars in urban areas and especially Nairobi have made the environment in residential areas unhealthy through noise pollution and other unacceptable activities that take place in those entities.

We urge the County Government to sustain the crackdown and expand it to all places across the City that are experiencing challenges of noise pollution. We further urge the County Government to strictly apply Section 11 of the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Act, 2014 which prohibits licensing of alcohol selling entities in residential areas or near schools.

We also challenge other Cities and Urban Counties across Kenya to carry out similar crackdown and stop licensing of bars in residential areas and near schools. As KARA, we shall continue mobilizing our members across the country to remain vigilant and work with the relevant Government entities to stop noise pollution and illegal operations of bars in residential areas.
