A delegation from Kara paid a courtesy call on the Director General of Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), Major General Mohamed Abdalla Badi to discuss possible areas of collaboration in regard to service delivery expectations of Resident Associations across the County.

Among the issues discussed include implementation of the Nairobi City County Community and Neighbourhood Associations Engagement Act;  Representation of Resident Associations in key committees of the County dealing with issues that are of interest to the Associations; Structured engagement between Kara and NMS.

The Director General stated that NMS was keen to work with Kara since service provision to the residents requires concerted efforts and cannot be left to NMS alone. He said that NMS is currently establishing its structures and drawing out a plan to ensure that it delivers on its mandate. In the meantime, they have identified some quick win projects that they will start rolling out immediately. These include garbage collection and fixing of street lights across the City.

Kara CEO Mr. Henry Ochieng briefed the Director General on some of the initiatives being undertaken by Resident Associations to support service delivery and the fight against COVID19 pandemic. He emphasized the need to have a structured and effective engagement between NMS and Kara as this will ensure participatory approach to provision of services. In this regard, he urged the Director General to prioritize implementation of the Nairobi City County Community and Neighbourhood Associations Engagement Act and also support mechanisms for obtaining feedback from Resident Associations such as regular roundtable forum between the Director General and representatives of Resident Associations.

Kara and NMS agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a framework for cooperation between the Parties on diverse service delivery areas.
