KARA held a meeting with The Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources to present views on the Sectional Properties Bill (National Assembly Bills No.23 of 2019).

The purpose of the Bill is to provide for the division of buildings into units to be owned by individual proprietors and common property to be owned by proprietors of the units as tenants in common and to provide for the use and management of the units and common property. Some of the key issues raised by KARA include the need to make a connection between the Bill and the National Addressing System and ensure that property owners take responsibility of ensuring that their property is adequately referenced as per the standard provided for in the National Addressing System instruments. KARA also urged for clarity on the impact of the new legislation on the zoning and change of user regulations and pointed out that there is need for more elaborate public participation to ensure that the proposed law doesn’t create more development challenges to the residents of Nairobi.
