Urban transport and development practitioners as well as researchers converged in Fortaleza, Brazil for the MOBILIZE Fortaleza Summit on 24th to 26th June 2019 to  celebrate best practices and share ideas on how to accelerate implementation of sustainable transport initiatives in various cities.

Participants at the Summit under the theme Reclaiming Streets for Access and Mobility were unanimous on the need for cities to prioritize investment on Non Motorized Transport as a way of improving access and mobility. Cities shared experiences and best practices as regards urban transportation and especially what they are doing to improve access and mobility. Kara was represented at the summit by the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Henry Ochieng.  “We still have a long way to go as a country on matters urban transportation but there are countries that have achieved great milestones from which Kenya can learn. The lessons and networks established at the summit will be key in promoting Kara’s agenda of advocating for implementation of sustainable transport policies and projects in Kenya” he said upon his return.

MOBILIZE is the annual sustainable transport summit of the Institute for Transportation and Development (ITDP). Each year, ITDP and the Sustainable Transport Award Committee select a city that has implemented innovative sustainable transportation projects in the preceding year. The winning city hosts MOBILIZE later on that year. Fortaleza won the Sustainable Transport Award for its implementation of good practices on their streets since 2014, including complete streets; reducing Carbon dioxide, and increasing road safety by prioritizing public transport, cycling and walking.
