Kara has partnered with the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) to support selected County Governments in developing solid waste management Policies and Bills for their respective Counties.

Having developed a model Policy and Bill frameworks for Solid Waste Management, a team from Kara and KAM held meetings with County Executive Committee (CECs) members in charge of Environment Kiambu, Kisii, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kajiado and Kisumu counties to discuss the model Policy and Bill and agree on customization of the instruments to suit the needs of the respective Counties. Other Counties to be visited include Machakos, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Kitui.

The development of appropriate legal instruments in the 11 counties will provide the desired regulatory frameworks for effective management of solid waste which if implemented successfully will increase recycling and reuse of waste; allow for conversion of waste to energy and compost; and appropriate handling of non-biodegradable waste. Ultimately, this will contribute towards sustainable solid waste management attainment of National Solid Waste Management (SWM) Strategy, 2015 and Vision 2030.
