Urban Planning experts have advised that meaningful development and service delivery in Kenya’s urban areas will only happen if there is structured engagement of citizens in decision making processes.

Speaking at the 60th Kara Bimonthly Talk Series forum, Prof. Alfred Omenya, Convener of Urban Sector Reference Group said that County Governments will realize better development only if they create opportunities for effective public participation in the County affairs.

The Kenya Institute of Planners through Mr. Osengo pointed out that sustainable development is under threat in Kenya because urban plans and policies are not being implemented by the government. “The government should recognize the continuing rapid growth of urban populations and make a greater commitment to planning, so as to harness the benefits of urban development” he said. Mr. Ken Oluoch from the Council of Governors challenged citizen groups to be proactive and engage the County Governments on service delivery issues that directly affect them.

Participants at the forum agreed to engage County Governments to establish Urban Boards for better service delivery as provided for in the Urban Areas and Cities Act.
