The government through the State Department of Housing and Urban Development has established a secretariat to drive implementation of New Urban Agenda (NUA) in Kenya.

This was revealed by the Principal Secretary for State Department of Housing & Urban Development Arch. Aidah Munano during a forum on NUA organized by Kara in partnership with Safaricom Ltd. In a statement read on her behalf by the Director of Housing, the PS stated that the Government is keen on working with various stakeholders to ensure that the NUA is effectively implemented in Kenya.

The NUA was adopted at the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development in October 2016, in Quito, Ecuador. The agenda provides a global framework for guiding development of sustainable urbanization, housing and human settlements over a period of twenty years. effective implementation of NUA will result in inclusive cities and human settlements which are resilient and optimally functioning as engines of economic growth.

Other speakers at the forum included Ms. Nancy Matimu, Head of Department - Safaricom Home and Mr. Linus Sijenyi of UN Habitat. Ms. Matimu said that Safaricom is committed to transforming the lives of Kenyans and that is the reason why it has integrated the Sustainable Development Goals in its programs. She pointed out that access to internet has provided an environment for most people to work and learn from their homes and Safaricom has opened up the digital space to make people enjoy the digital lifestyle. Mr. Sijenyi said that the UN Habitat has developed a country program that will guide implementation of the New Urban Agenda in Kenya. The program is scheduled to run from 2018- 2022 and will be implemented in partnership with the government and other key stakeholders.
