Kara in collaboration with Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) developed Non Motorized Transport (NMT) Policy for Nairobi County.

The objective of the policy is to ensure harmonization, prioritization and coordination of NMT facility development and maintenance in the City.

The policy was adopted by the County Assembly on 28th June 2017. Kara is keen to work with various stakeholders to ensure that the policy is fully implemented. In this regard Kara organized a stakeholders meeting on 19th October 2017 to provide a platform for discussions on the NMT policy implementation strategies and agree on monitoring and evaluation framework. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders drawn from Nairobi City County Government; Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, National Transport and Safety Authority and various civil society organization working and/or interested in NMT agenda.

Eng. Moses Kuiyaki who spoke on behalf of the county government said that there is need to develop an urban design manual to guide development of better transport infrastructures in various parts of the City. He also said that some roads in the CBD and some parts of the city such as Pangani and Lusaka roads already have NMT facilities. Participants agreed that implementation of NMT Policy will require concerted efforts by various stakeholders and continuous review of progress being made.
