The rapid spread of cell phones across the globe creates new opportunities to engage citizens to improve public transport in our cities.

This trend shows no signs of slowing, so governments have an opportunity to leverage this connectivity towards improved services and innovative strategies. To help leaders get started, a webinar was hosted on 23rd August 2017 under “Meeting of the Minds” to share about strategies and successes for Nairobi following a successful initiative jointly undertaken by Kara and Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CSUD) of Columbia University. The key presenters at the forum were Mr. Henry Ochieng, Chief Executive Officer at Kara and Dr.Jacqueline M. Klopp, Associate Research Scholar at CSUD. The presentations focused on experiences and ideas from Nairobi on how to engage the public more to improve public transport - which is key to producing better cities and also addressing the many social and environmental challenges including inequality of opportunity, climate change and air pollution. Specifically, the presented shared lessons from their joint work around public transport improvements in Nairobi and explained the importance of leveraging cell phone technologies to promote citizen engagement and influence decision making. The webinar was attended by over 100 participants from across the world.
