On behalf of Kara and on my own behalf, I would like to thank our members, friends and partners for the steadfast support in the year 2016 that enabled us to realize notable milestones for the benefit of our members....

and the wider public.

We value your support and look forward to scaling even greater heights in the coming years.

As you maybe aware, we initiated the development of a law to provide a framework for structured and effective engagement between Residents Associations and Nairobi City County Government. As a result of this effort, the Nairobi City County Community and Neighbourhood Associations Engagement Act, 2016 was enacted and came into operation in November. We are working with the County Government and other stakeholders to develop guidelines and necessary agreements to facilitate implementation of the law.

We are confident that with the law in place, some of the challenges our members have been facing when it comes to engaging the County Government will be addressed. We have also developed the draft National Residents Associations Bill to ensure that Residents Associations across the country are strengthened and have a legal framework for engaging the Government on service delivery agenda.

We were honoured to receive a Presidential Award during the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Taxpayers’ Day 2016, for promoting public awareness and education on tax amnesty for rental income and the simplified tax rates across the country. We are happy to have contributed towards enhancing tax compliance and enabling KRA to register significant improvement on its revenue collection from rental income. We will continue with our awareness creation and education platforms to enable our members and the wider public make informed decisions.

The Kara Chairpersons forum continued to be active during the year and we got the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and National Land Commission (NLC) to make commitments on action to be taken to address the issues raised by the leaders of various Resident Associations. We appreciate members who created time to participate in the forums and look forward to an even more intense and productive sessions next year.

We successfully hosted the first ever Kara Business Expo & Conference event which was designed to provide a platform for Resident Associations and the wider public to network and directly engage service providers both from the private and public sectors. We appreciate our members, friends and partners who participated as exhibitors, sponsors or visitors and we are planning to have a bigger and more successful event next year.

Finally, we are looking into the future with optimism and are confident that with your unwavering support, we will be able to deliver on expectations and firmly secure Kara and indeed the place of Resident Associations in Kenya. As always we are proud to be associated with you.

I take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful, merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Thank you.
